Travel Systems Explained: How to Choose the Right Car Seat & Stroller for Your Baby's Age

Your complete guide to making the best choice for every stage of your baby's journey

Becoming a parent comes with so many wonderful decisions — and choosing the right car seat and stroller is one of the most important ones you'll make. At Hello Mom, we've been helping South African parents navigate these choices since 2007, and we know how overwhelming the options can feel. That's why we've put together this simple, stage-by-stage guide to help you choose with confidence.

Why Age and Size Matter More Than You Think

A car seat or stroller that's perfect for a newborn won't necessarily be right for a curious, wriggly toddler. Safety standards, weight limits, and ergonomic support all change as your baby grows — so understanding the stages is key to making a smart investment.

Stage 1: Newborn to 6 Months — The Fourth Trimester Essentials

Car Seat

Your newborn needs a rear-facing infant car seat. This position cradles and moves with your baby in a crash, protecting their fragile head, neck, and spine. Look for:

  • A 5-point harness system
  • A newborn insert for smaller babies
  • Side-impact protection
  • Easy installation (ISOFIX/LATCH is a bonus!)

Stroller

Newborns need to lie fully flat — their spines aren't ready for an upright position yet. Your options are:

  • A pram or carrycot attachment (ideal for the first 6 months)
  • A travel system — a stroller frame that clicks directly onto your infant car seat, so you never have to wake a sleeping baby

Hello Mom Tip: A travel system is one of the best investments you can make as a new parent. One click and your sleeping baby moves seamlessly from car to pavement.

Stage 2: 6 to 12 Months — Sitting Up and Taking Notice

Car Seat

Keep your baby rear-facing for as long as possible — most safety experts recommend until they reach the maximum weight or height limit of their seat. Many convertible car seats support rear-facing up to 18kg or more.

Stroller

By around 6 months (when your baby has good head and neck control), you can transition to a stroller with an upright or recline position. Look for:

  • Multiple recline positions
  • A good sunshade/canopy
  • Easy one-hand fold (you'll thank us later!)
  • Adequate storage — because you'll be carrying everything

Stage 3: 12 Months to 3 Years — On the Move

Car Seat

Once your child outgrows their rear-facing seat, it's time for a forward-facing car seat with a harness. Keep them harnessed for as long as the seat allows — it's the safest option.

Stroller

Active toddlers need a stroller that keeps up! Consider:

  • A lightweight or umbrella stroller for easy travel
  • A jogging stroller if you're an active family
  • Tandem or double strollers if a second baby is on the way

Stage 4: 3 Years and Beyond — The Final Stretch

Car Seat

Transition to a high-back booster seat once your child outgrows their harnessed seat. They should use a booster until the vehicle's seatbelt fits correctly — typically around 36kg or 1.45m tall.

Stroller

Many children still enjoy a stroller for longer outings up to age 4 or 5. A lightweight, compact fold is your best friend at this stage.

Travel Systems: The Best of Both Worlds

A travel system combines a stroller chassis with a compatible infant car seat — and it's one of the most popular choices for new parents, and for good reason:

  • Convenience — Click your car seat in and out without disturbing your baby
  • Value — One system that grows with your baby
  • Safety — Designed and tested to work together
  • Versatility — Many accept carrycots for newborns and the car seat

When shopping for a travel system, check that the car seat and stroller are tested as a compatible pair — not all combinations are safe, even if they physically click together.

Questions to Ask Before You Buy

Before you invest, ask yourself:

  • How will I use it most? City pavements, shopping centres, hiking trails?
  • What car do I drive? Boot size matters for stroller storage.
  • Will I be travelling by plane? Lightweight and cabin-approved options exist.
  • Do I have stairs at home? A lighter stroller makes life much easier.
  • Am I planning more children? A convertible or double-ready system could save money long-term.
